The economic performance of China’s methanol industry since 2019: At the 2020 China Methanol Industry Conference held on August 20 in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, the Nitrogen Fertilizer Industry Association presented an overview of the economic situation of China’s methanol industry since 2019, as follows. First, positive results have been achieved in industrial structure adjustment. In 2019, China’s methanol production capacity was 89.92 million tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.2%. Among them, the methanol production capacity based on coal as a raw material has reached 67.791 million tons, accounting for 75.4% of the total production capacity, an increase of 9.4 percentage points compared to 2018 ； The production capacity of methanol derived from natural gas, as well as its share, have further decreased ； Methanol is produced using coke oven gas as a raw material, and some new plants have come online driven by the recovery of the coking industry. In 2019, the production capacity of methanol produced from coke oven gas was 11.506 million tons, accounting for 12.8% of the total production capacity, with a year-on-year increase of 1.8%. On the other hand, the level of industrial scale-up continues to increase. In 2019, capacity below 100,000 tons per year accounted for only 2.2% ； A production capacity of 100,000–300,000 tons per year corresponds to 15.616 million tons per year, accounting for 17.4% of the total production capacity, a decrease of 3.2% compared to the previous year ； The production capacity of over 300,000 tons per year reached 72.336 million tons per year, accounting for 80.4% of the total capacity, an increase of 10.7% on a year-on-year basis ； In particular, the coal-based methanol production capacity of 600,000 tons per year or more amounts to 46.04 million tons per year, accounting for 51.2% of the total production capacity. In addition, the industry’s efforts to reduce overcapacity have continued, further optimizing the structure of the methanol industry. In 2019, another portion of outdated and inefficient production capacity was phased out; as a result of thorough investigations and assessments, the amount of capacity that was removed amounted to 1.125 million tons. The main unit of the mono-alcohol plant plays a significant role by utilizing advanced gasification technology. In 2019, the national methanol production volume was 69.97 million tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.2%. Among them, there are 78 companies using advanced new coal gasification technologies for methanol production; their combined methanol production capacity amounts to 55.68 million tons, accounting for 61.9% of the total production capacity, a increase of 12.1% compared to the previous year ； Production reached 52.89 million tons, accounting for 75.6% of the total output, an increase of 9.1% on a year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, the methanol production capacity and output of the urea-formaldehyde plants continued to decline. In 2019, the urea-formaldehyde plants had a production capacity of 8.291 million tons, accounting for 9.2% of the total production capacity, a decrease of 7.8% on a year-on-year basis ； Production was only 4.496 million tons, accounting for 6.4% of the total output, a decrease of 22.1% on a year-on-year basis.
