In simple terms, a valve that opens when pressure is applied is called a pressure-operated valve, while one that closes when pressure is applied is called a pressure-released valve. In terms of operation on a computer screen, for air-open valves, the greater the output signal applied, the more the valve opens; whereas for air-close valves, the greater the output signal, the more the valve closes.
