Dear all: I would like to ask, in chemical engineering design, where does the discharge from the safety valve go – since the substance discharged is a flammable gas? Are there any regulations or guidelines? There is a requirement to go to the flare system; it is not allowed to discharge directly, so a collection tank is needed. However, what to do with the contents of that tank in the end remains an issue. Thank you! I observe that for the most part, they still discharge directly into the atmosphere.
The material discharged by the safety valve can be whatever is needed, as long as it meets environmental regulations. The specific method of handling depends on the properties of the material, such as recycling or burning, etc. For reference

Since the safety valve you’re looking at is vented to the atmosphere, it certainly isn’t a tank used for storing hazardous materials.

Connecting to an explosion venting tank only serves as a buffer; the outlet of the tank still needs to release air to the atmosphere. If the air is to be discharged into a flare system, there are countless enterprises around me, and they all certainly have safety valves, but I haven’t seen any of them equipped with flare systems.
Specific materials need to be treated individually; not all gases cannot be recycled. For reference.

For toxic, hazardous, and flammable materials, it is no longer allowed to discharge them directly through safety valves; they must be sent through a flare system (which is now specified as an emergency emission system) or be collected and treated.
