The 2×50,000 tons/year MMA production project using the ethylene-based process at Zhongyuan Dahuahua is set to commence construction. Henan Zhongke Puyuan New Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Zhongke Puyuan) was established in 2022, with Zhongyuan Dahuahua Group Co., Ltd. of Henan Province, Puyang Financial Holding Co., Ltd., and Puyang Economic and Technological Development Zone Urban Construction Investment Co., Ltd. planning to jointly hold shares in the company; In order to enhance the product industry chain of its group companies and make rational and effective use of regional resources, Zhongke Puyuan plans to invest in building a methyl methacrylate (MMA) production facility using the ethylene process, with an annual capacity of 2×50,000 tons (50,000 tons per phase), based on the 1,000-ton MMA pilot project at Zhongyuan Dahuahua Company. The facility will use ethylene, H2, CO, methanol, formaldehyde, and other raw materials, and will produce MMA through four reaction steps – hydroformylation, aldol condensation, oxidation, and esterification – followed by a series of distillation processes for purification. Since 2010, the Institute of Process Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been researching the technical approach for producing MMA via the ethylene-syngas route. In 2017, a industrial pilot plant with a capacity of one thousand tons was built in the coal chemical complex of Zhongyuan Dahua Group Co., Ltd. in Henan Province; it began operating stably in July 2018 and passed a 72-hour test organized by the Petrochemical Industry Federation.
