A vertically installed shell-and-tube heat exchanger, with the cold fluid flowing in the tube side and the hot fluid flowing in the shell side. Due to the baffles in the shell side, the fluid flow there is turbulent. But could it be that in the tube side, the cold fluid flows only in a few heat exchange tubes located near the inlet of the head, while the fluid in most of the tubes surrounding them is essentially at rest or has a very low flow velocity? ? ? ?
Vertical installation is not perpendicular installation. Liquid will not flow from bottom to top; if the tubes are not filled when flowing from top to bottom, deviation in flow may occur
You have only considered the heat exchanger; the configurations before and after it haven’t been mentioned. This situation is unlikely to occur under forced convection conditions.
It is inevitable that the liquid will experience varying degrees of deflection due to differences in pressure drop. At the microscopic level, even in a single pipe, the flow velocity across its cross-section varies (it is faster at the center of the pipe and slower near the wall). The heat exchanger only needs to meet the heat exchange requirements on a macroscopic level; moreover, the heat exchange conditions can be improved by selecting an appropriate heat exchanger and changing the direction of fluid inflow and outflow.
When liquid flows from top to bottom, efficient liquid distributors are generally used to reduce the occurrence of such situations.
