Code for Building Design 3.3.11: Intermediate storage tanks for Class C liquids in factories shall be located in separate rooms, and their volume shall not exceed 1 m3. The room in which this intermediate storage tank is located shall have enclosure components with a fire resistance rating that is not lower than the requirements for buildings of fire resistance class II; the doors of such rooms shall be of class A fire-resistant type. Explanation of building code provisions 3.3.11: This provision specifies the fire separation requirements for installing intermediate storage tanks for Class C liquids within factory buildings. The intermediate storage tanks for Class C liquids located within the factory building are designed to be stored in separate rooms in order to prevent the liquid from spreading or being affected by external fire sources; fire barriers are also installed to effectively control the spread of fires. Question: Is this feasible in practice? In our small design firm, we often encounter auxiliary intermediate tanks for Class A factories, which are located right next to the factory building and are designed as part of it. This regulation requires that intermediate storage tanks for Class C liquids in factories meet such high standards – how is that feasible? In workshops of categories A, B, and C with a volume greater than 1 m3, the metering tanks for solvents of these same categories are installed directly. Is this specification reasonable? This one is indeed a bit confusing; in fact, I haven’t seen such a factory building yet. Firstly, the definition of an intermediate storage tank is not clear; what kind of tank is considered an intermediate storage tank? 1 m3 is also too small; almost every chemical processing unit consists of tanks that are larger than this. Furthermore, if this is the case for Category C, what about Categories A and B? (The provisions do not specify this.) If ordinary chemical plants are built according to these rules, then they wouldn’t be factories at all – they would be beehives! Fortunately, Clause 1.0.3 of the General Provisions for Building Codes states that “this code does not apply to.” . . . . . ”Among them is the fire protection design for buildings in petrochemical enterprises; therefore, \"when there are specific prior standards, it is advisable to follow their provisions,\" and thus the petrochemical standards were used
I have the same doubts. Additionally, the current standard specifies a volume of 5 cubic units.
