I would like to ask: is the pipe classification in PID determined by the process engineering team, the piping engineering team, or the materials engineering team? The problem we are facing at present is that the pipeline is rated at 150 LB, with a design pressure of 1.58 MPA and a design temperature of 150 degrees; the material used is carbon steel, which brings the temperature and pressure values to the upper limits specified in the flange’s curves. I want the engineering team to raise the pipe grade to 300LB. The process department replied that it is up to the piping team to decide. Is there any regulation specifying whether this should be determined by the process department, the piping team, or the materials department?

The final document of the pipeline grade table is prepared by the process engineering team, but it requires collaboration between this team and the pipeline materials team. The process engineering team provides details such as the medium, phase state, temperature, and pressure of the pipelines to the pipeline materials team; after the materials team makes its decisions, it sends those back to the process engineering team, who then incorporates them into the P&ID diagrams and pipeline specification tables to create the final version
It would be good to have relevant standards, preferably ASME or foreign standards.

It’s a communication issue, I guess; everything relies on rules, and there are just too many of them. Is there any standard specifying whether to brush teeth or wash the face first in the morning? As long as the process and safety requirements are met, it’s sufficient to have internal discussions to determine the appropriate procedures
Communication is no longer possible; the process engineering is handled by foreign engineers, and the materials are also of foreign origin – only the piping-related work is carried out by domestic engineers. The foreigners are shirking responsibility. That’s why we look for standards.
