Heavy metal pollution in water has become a significant environmental issue. In particular, the electroplating industry generates large amounts of heavy metal wastewater, such as that from nickel plating, copper plating, zinc plating, and cadmium plating. So, what are the common methods for treating heavy metal wastewater? The electrolytic method removes heavy metals from wastewater by using electrolytic oxidation to form hydroxide precipitates of these metals. The chelation precipitation method can remove most heavy metals such as zinc, nickel, copper, and cadmium from electroplating wastewater using the HMC-M1 heavy metal capture agent; with this method, the concentration of these metals can be reduced to below 0.1 mg/L. The biofilm processes mainly include electrodialysis and reverse osmosis. Electrodialysis requires multiple treatment stages in order to concentrate the useful substances in wastewater to a level suitable for reuse. Reverse osmosis is used to treat rinsing wastewater from electroplating processes such as nickel plating, copper plating, zinc plating, and cadmium plating. The removal efficiency for metals such as nickel, copper, zinc, and cadmium is generally greater than 99%. If the heavy metals in wastewater in the adsorption method exist in the form of cations, they can be treated using cation exchange resins or other cation exchangers ; If present in an anionic form, such as mercury complex anions in mercury-containing wastewater or chromate anions in chromium-containing electroplating wastewater, treatment is carried out using anion exchange resins. In addition to ion exchange resins, there are also other metal ion extractants and adsorption materials. In cases where water quality is good, the treatment accuracy of ion exchange resins is usually higher than that of the other three methods, achieving levels below 0.02 ppm; for certain metals, it is even possible to reach levels undetectable, namely below 1 ppb.
