I asked several manufacturers of graphite heat exchangers – can’t these graphite heat exchangers be made into pressure vessels for vapor condensation? The manufacturer says that graphite heat exchangers are not pressure vessels – so isn’t it sufficient as long as they meet the requirements for pressure vessels? I don’t understand

It can be used as a pressure vessel, with graphite tubes for the tubeside to carry the medium, and carbon steel for the shell side to carry steam.
It depends on your pressure levels and the medium involved. Take a graphite heat exchanger as an example: you may not have eaten it, but you’ve surely seen sesame candy. In this case, graphite corresponds to sesame; first, a model is created, which is like a larger piece of sesame candy, with holes made in it in various directions. Then it’s dipped in resin, with this resin acting as the sugar. Finally, the pieces are put together and secured with a casing, resulting in a condenser. This type of condenser does not have high pressure resistance; over time, as the solvent is used, the resin is gradually dissolved, which leads to internal leaks. This is why, once the condenser is removed, its originally smooth inner surface becomes rough.
There are non-metallic pressure vessels. However, the appropriate impregnation resin must be chosen depending on the temperature level.
It might be too much stress. Graphite products are primarily limited by the operating temperature of the impregnating resin and the bonding between the resin and graphite.
The applicable operating pressure and temperature conditions specified in the Standard for Rectangular Block-Orifice Graphite Heat Exchangers (HG/T 3187-2012) are: ≤ 0.3 MPaG and ≤ 150°C. However, in recent years, the allowable operating pressure and temperature conditions for products from some manufacturers have been extended to: ≤ 1.0 MPaG and ≤180°C, or even ≤200°C.
The low-pressure steam graphite reboiler has been dealt with; I’ll communicate with the manufacturer.
