Can a pressure relief valve be installed on a riser?
It is best to follow the instructions provided for the equipment’s valves; this is for reference only.
Seems I’ve never seen one installed on a riser.
Unverified and represents only personal opinion. I believe it’s possible. From the principles of most pressure relief valves, it can be seen that the set pressure is adjusted by the preload force of a spring or an external air source. The automatic adjustment mechanism is regulated by changes in the pressure within the sealed chamber. So it can be installed on the riser. However, when installed on a riser, there is a possibility that the closed valve will create a dead end (blind leg). Therefore, except in special circumstances, it is generally installed horizontally.
I have never seen riser installation, and no standards with relevant requirements were found.
In principle, it’s possible, but in practice I’ve never seen it.
1. Check what type of pressure relief valve you have – is it self-acting or spring-loaded? What is the medium for reducing pressure? Gas or liquid? 2. In the case of gas pressure reducers, it’s perfectly fine to install them on risers. When you have time, you can take a look at the design of manifold systems; they are all installed on risers. If the medium is a liquid, it is not recommended to install it on a riser, as static pressure may have an effect
