This achievement filled a gap in China’s capabilities in this area, marking a new breakthrough in research on clean and efficient combustion technologies that involve mixing carbon-based fuels with hydrogen-rich fuels such as ammonia. The ammonia/coal mixed combustion technology involves mixing ammonia with coal in a certain ratio to use as a fuel for new boilers; this approach can effectively replace fossil fuels and enable thermal power plants to significantly reduce their carbon emissions. At present, research on this technology worldwide is still in its initial stages, and no engineering applications have yet been undertaken. Xi’an Thermal Power Institute has independently developed key technologies for enhanced combustion and nitrogen oxide control using ammonia/coal mixed fuel. By utilizing its 4-megawatt combustion test rig, the institute successfully carried out China’s first pilot test at the megawatt scale for ammonia/coal mixed fuel combustion, providing an important theoretical basis for the efficient, clean, and flexible use of ammonia in coal-fired boilers. Xi’an Thermal Power Institute will actively promote the engineering demonstration of technologies involving the high proportion use of ammonia in coal combustion, as well as equipment for mixed ammonia/coal combustion and pure ammonia combustion, thereby making a positive contribution to the development of a new type of power system in China and to achieving the \"dual carbon\" goals.
