Peking University Establishes Laboratory for Deep Coalbed Methane Development April 9, 2025 Recently, the Science and Technology Department of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region issued a notice regarding the establishment of key laboratories in the region, and Peking University was officially approved to set up a key laboratory focused on the formation mechanisms of deep coalbed methane and its efficient exploitation. The key laboratory is led by the Ordos Energy Research Institute of Peking University, and is jointly established with China University of Petroleum (Beijing) and China University of Geosciences (Beijing). Guided by the \"dual carbon\" strategy and energy security requirements, it focuses on large-scale exploration and efficient development of deep coalbed methane in Inner Mongolia. It aims to establish theories regarding the accumulation of deep coalbed methane, models for its formation, and evaluation methods, as well as to develop technical frameworks for drilling, reservoir description, and fracturing processes. The development of the key laboratory will be centered on the needs of low-carbon and sustainable development in the energy economy of the autonomous region, focusing on the exploration and development of deep coalbed methane in Inner Mongolia. It will carry out theoretical research and technological innovation in the green exploration and development of deep coalbed methane, establish theoretical frameworks and technological chains, facilitate the application of these achievements, and create a research center, a technological innovation platform, and a talent training facility for deep coalbed methane exploration and development in Inner Mongolia that has international influence.
