KraussMaffei Achieves New Breakthrough in Aerospace Applications of Thermoplastic Materials 2025-05-30 17:16:54 Recently, KraussMaffei, in collaboration with the U.S. National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), utilized its innovative FiberForm process to design specialized complex ribbed structural components for vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOLs). This represents a breakthrough in the use of thermoplastic lightweight solutions in the field of low-altitude transportation. This structural component was manufactured using a KraussMaffei GXW 450—2000/1400 injection molding machine, which incorporates the FiberFomm process. This process allows organic sheets made by impregnating continuous fibers with thermoplastic resin to be placed in a mold, followed by secondary overmolding under heat and pressure, thereby achieving integrated molding. Unlike traditional metal rib structural components, which require milling and are time-consuming and material-intensive, the FiberForm process reduces the processing time from over 100 hours to just 2 minutes, while maintaining the same level of strength and safety performance. This innovative reinforcement structure design has successfully demonstrated the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the FiberForm process in the manufacturing of complex aviation components, setting a new benchmark for the aviation manufacturing industry.
