1. There are a large number of chemical processing units in China that are over 20 years old. According to data released by research institutions such as Tianfeng Chemical, Shenwan Hongyuan Research, and CICC, out of the 158 different chemical products analyzed, 142 of them have processing units that are over 20 years old, accounting for approximately 90% of all the products under consideration. In many chemical enterprises in China, there are chemical processing units that have been in use for over 20 years. Among the 158 chemical products counted, only 12 types have had a production capacity share in chemical plants exceeding 50% for over 20 years. Among them, agricultural films account for over 20% of the total production capacity of chemical manufacturing facilities, accounting for 83% of this capacity and thus ranking first among all the categories listed; followed by bromine, which accounts for over 81% of the production capacity. Phosphoric acid comes in third, with a production capacity share of over 70%. Since 2000, China has seen the large-scale deployment of agricultural film production facilities. On the one hand, the investment threshold for this industry is low; on the other hand, China is making significant efforts to develop its agriculture, resulting in a high demand for agricultural film, which has driven the widespread use of such production facilities. The development of the bromine industry is also driven by **demand for this industry, as well as low investment barriers and abundant resources, which have contributed to its early inception.
2. What is the global standing of China’s aging facilities, which are over 20 years old? The average operating time of some plants in Europe has exceeded 42 years, such as certain ethylene plants. SABIC’s Olefin 6 steam cracker, located in Willton, Teesside, UK, came online in 1979 and is now 46 years old. The plant of Ineos Phenols in Gladbeck, Germany, was established in 1954; it is now 71 years old. However, the European chemical industry shut down a large number of olefin plants between 2023 and 2025; the Sabic and INEOS plants mentioned above were both permanently closed by 2025. Between 2023 and 2025, the European chemical industry shut down approximately 11 million tons of production capacity, of which olefin production capacity accounted for 26%; most of these facilities had been in operation for a long time. Although the North American chemical industry has seen significant new production capacity added in recent years, there are still many older facilities; for example, Dow Chemical’s propylene oxide plant in Freeport, Texas, will be shut down permanently by 2025 due to its old age. Although China has a large number of chemical plants that are over 20 years old, their proportion is relatively low compared to Europe and the United States; in particular, for only 12 types of products does the capacity generated by plants over 20 years old account for more than 50%. The chemical industries in Europe and the United States developed earlier; in China, the chemical industry began to build large-scale production facilities after 2000, with limited capacity prior to that.
