China’s first production line capable of manufacturing 20,000 tons of wet-process masterbatch per year was recently put into operation at the company’s facility in Liaoning. This production line is an expanded version of Qingdao’s 4,000-ton pilot plant, marking the official entry of Heimao Co., Ltd.’s wet-process masterbatch technology into the stage of large-scale mass production. It is reported that the traditional dry mixing process relies on mechanical shear force to incorporate carbon black into raw rubber, and it has inherent defects such as uneven dispersion of fillers, high energy consumption, and dust pollution. Since 2018, Hei Mao Co., Ltd. has been working together with a team of academicians from Beijing University of Chemical Technology to develop innovative solutions. By employing liquid-phase composite technology, and through processes such as carbon black slurry preparation, liquid-phase composite flocculation, and post-treatment, they have achieved a nanoscale uniform dispersion of carbon black within the rubber matrix. Verified through extensive experimental data, wet-process masterbatch maintains basic properties such as tensile strength on par with dry-process glue, while improving wear resistance by approximately 20%, enhancing dynamic hysteresis performance by about 30%, and reducing energy consumption during the mixing process by 30%. At the same time, since the wet masterbatch is in sheet form, no carbon black dust is generated during the feeding process, significantly improving the production environment. Starting in 2023, in response to the application needs of its downstream customers, this project has successfully developed 8 different product grades, covering a wide range of applications such as wide-tire treads (HMQ-WNC6511), wide-tire base adhesives (HMQ-WNC4531), wide-tire shoulder adhesives (HMQ-WNC4411), all-steel tire treads (HMQ-WNC6531), all-steel tire base adhesives (HMQ-WNC4412), all-steel tire shoulder adhesives (HMQ-WNC4211), all-steel tire edge adhesives (HMQ-WNC4532), and giant-tire treads (HMQ-WNC8511). In the verification of finished tires, the 16.00R25 tires made using wet masterbatch underwent testing by a third party, and their durability improved from 100 hours for conventional tires to 150 hours ; Actual tracking tests in mining areas have shown that the mileage per millimeter of tread pattern has increased from 1600 Km/mm to 2600 Km/mm, significantly extending the tire’s service life. Shi Yuming, head of the Black Cat Shares Research Institute, explained that the wet-process masterbatch technology has also passed the evaluation of scientific and technological achievements organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. The evaluation committee, led by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering such as Jian Xigao and Wang Yuzhong, agreed that this technology possesses independent intellectual property rights and is at the international leading level. The project established a pilot production line at Qingdao Heimaot in 2022, completed its upgrade and renovation in 2023, and in 2024 invested in the construction of a production line with an annual capacity of 160,000 tons at Liaoning Heimaot Composite New Materials Technology Co., Ltd., which is under Heimaot Holdings. The first phase, with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons, was completed and put into operation recently. Shi Yuming said that the transition from kiloton-scale pilot production to 10,000-ton-scale mass production is an important achievement of the deep integration of industry, academia, and research, as well as of the transformation of technological innovations. In the future, Hei Mao Co., Ltd. will continue to optimize its manufacturing processes and improve product quality, thereby promoting the use of wet-process masterbatches in high-end applications such as shock-absorbing components, sealing elements, and rubber parts for new energy vehicles. Wu Xiaohui, the project leader at Beijing University of Chemical Technology, pointed out that the wet masterbatch technology not only solves the long-standing dispersion problem in this industry but also provides a viable approach for green manufacturing as well as energy savings and carbon reduction in the tire industry.
