[Ocean Chemical Technology Frontier] Researchers use castor oil and lignin to prepare bio-based self-healing polyurethane

Recently, the biomass functional polymer materials team of the Institute of Forestry and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Forestry and others designed a new oil-based supramolecular polyurethane. This material innovatively introduces the synergistic structure of "dynamic switch" (dynamic disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds) and "rigid-flexible balance network" (castor oil long aliphatic chain + polyphenol functionalized lignin). Thanks to this design, polyurethane not only has excellent mechanical properties (adjustable tensile strength, high toughness), but also achieves 87% self-healing efficiency and efficient recyclability. The inherent aromatic structure of lignin gives the material 100% UV shielding efficiency and a photothermal conversion capability of up to 153°C. Through a combination of experiments and theoretical simulations, the cooperative mechanism of hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds was elucidated. This research provides new design ideas for the application of bio-based polyurethane in the field of smart responsive and sustainable materials. The related work was published in the Science collaborative journal "Research" under the title "Tailoring Supramolecular Polyurethane Featuring Bio-based Rigid-Flexible Segment Hybrids with Intrinsic Photothermal Conversion and UV-Blocking".
