In practical applications, how is communication established between Siemens PLCs (such as the 200 series) and DCS systems? What protocol is used, and what types of cables are employed for the DCS to participate in control?
It depends on the communication protocol you use. MODBUS is quite commonly used. For control points, it is not recommended to use communication methods, especially when dealing with products from different manufacturers
Almost all of the 200 models use Modbus communication, as the communication ports integrated in their CPUs support the Modbus RTU protocol. For control interlock signals between systems, communication is not recommended; hard wiring is generally used.
We use MODBUS 485, Category V cables for communication between our DCS and PLC. However, both control and interlocking use hardwiring, which is more reliable.
