Can a combustible gas detector detect only one type of gas? Some say it can detect multiple types, while others claim it can only do one-to-one detection. Is this related to principles such as catalysis and infrared technology?
Sure, there are such devices. Just like hydrogen sulfide detectors, there’s also a four-in-one device that can detect oxygen, flammable gases, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, and so on.
Does that mean that the devices for detecting multiple gases are also designed for specific types of gases only? Is there a device that can detect any flammable gas, no matter what type it is?
In simple terms, it is a type of probe (sensing element) that can only detect one type of gas.
They are all specific; not every device can detect them.
The sensor of a gas alarm can detect various gases. At least for catalytic probes, in theory, any gas that can be ignited can be detected. For reasons related to lines and surfaces, when installing (selecting) a gas alarm, it can be used for only one type of gas. This gives the illusion that the probe can only measure one type of gas. 1. The sensors of gas detectors have different sensitivities to various gases. For example, with the same probe, the lowest detectable concentration for chlorine is 1 ppm, while it is 500 ppm for methane; there is a difference of 500 times. This results in a probe with (sensitivity) that cannot meet various requirements. Manufacturers produce several different models of probes to suit various situations. Saying that a certain gas requires a specific type of probe actually means choosing probes with different sensitivities. In fact, for gases with similar properties, the same probe can be used for measurement ； 2. The alarm threshold of the gas detector must be set based on the most dangerous component. For example: when multiple hazardous gases may be present at a site, the alarm can only trigger for the most dangerous one. The settings and calibrations are all for this type of gas. It’s made to seem as though it has nothing to do with other gases. In fact, other gases can also trigger an alarm.
