On November 27, 2018, NASA’s InSight probe successfully made a soft landing on Mars. Mars can be considered the planet in the solar system that is best understood by humans, after Earth – though of course, this still isn’t enough. All previous probes were used to study Mars’ surface, atmosphere, and magnetic field. For example, the famous Mars rover Curiosity was primarily used to analyze the surface geology and chemical composition of Mars, while InSight was the first probe to explore Mars’ interior, with the aim of understanding its internal structure in detail. Before landing, InSight had been in space for over half a year, traveling more than 484 million kilometers. It differs from previous approaches to selecting detector locations; only areas that are favorable for the detector’s operation need to be considered. In March 2017, scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced that the ultimately selected landing site for InSight was in the Elysium Planitia region on Mars. As the first Mars probe to study the interior of Mars, InSight was also equipped with various scientific instruments designed to measure Mars’ vital signs, such as its pulses, temperature, reflectivity, and seismic activity. After landing, InSight will use highly sensitive seismometers to \"take the pulse\" of Mars, by monitoring vibrations on the Martian surface with precision down to the atomic level, thereby helping scientists map the evolution of Mars’ internal structure. “The Insight mission will also insert a thermometer deep into Mars, using a heat flow probe that can penetrate 5 meters into the planet’s interior, in order to detect changes in temperature within Mars. This will help understand how heat flows within the planet and its impact on Mars’ geological structure. In addition, the Insight mission also carried the Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment, which could use radio transmissions between Mars and Earth to assess the perturbations caused by Mars’ rotation on its axis, thereby providing clues as to the size of Mars’ core. By using these instruments, it is possible to study the internal structure of Mars, fill in the gaps in our knowledge of Mars’ physics, and gain a better understanding of how rocky planets are formed. However, scientists are still conducting a detailed survey of the environment surrounding InSight in order to determine where to place the measurement equipment, and this process is expected to take around two to three months. After that, scientists will need some time to test and calibrate Perseverance’s instruments. Only then can humanity’s first exploration of Mars’ interior officially begin.
