Honeywell DCS 485 communication issues

There are 6 water cutters on site, of the bus-type; the wiring goes from 1-2-3-4-5-6, with the communication lines connected in series, and then from 1 to the cabinet room. Currently, tests are being conducted using communication software from the cabinet room, and all 6 devices can communicate with each other. When 5 of these devices are removed and only one device is used for testing, it can still communicate on its own. What could be the reason for this? How to solve this problem.
What if communication tests are done on-site? What is the communication distance from the site to the cabinet room?
DCS master station, 6 slave stations, with addresses set. Add a resistor at the last station.
To connect them together, isn’t it done by using something like a splitter to combine them?
