To prevent frequent alarms from variables, a certain threshold is generally set when the variable drops to the alarm level; some people refer to this as a dead zone. Which term is more accurate?

A threshold is a value that, when reached, triggers a certain change. You can speak of an upper threshold or a lower threshold, but this is not how it is generally referred to; the term is usually used in a general sense. This dead zone you mentioned actually has another name, which is backlash.
