To determine whether a thermocouple is functioning properly, one usually uses a multimeter to measure the two wires of the thermocouple. Is it possible to conduct the measurement directly on the wires themselves?

Most thermocouples used in industry have their open-circuit or short-circuit conditions monitored online, and some intelligent transmitters can even provide diagnostic signals directly. To measure the millivolt value of a thermocouple, it is best to use a potentiometer or a millivolt meter, as the accuracy and stability of a multimeter are not sufficient for measuring thermocouple signals. Sometimes, even by connecting a resistor to a multimeter, readings of a few to a dozen millivolts can be displayed; such false readings from a multimeter can affect the actual millivolt signal from the thermocouple.
