Because different solvents can result in significant variations in the corrosive properties of aluminum trichloride. If it is an aqueous solution, then basically no type of steel is suitable, as aluminum trichloride undergoes severe hydrolysis in water; its acidity and high concentration of chloride ions cause severe corrosion of steel.
