I would like to ask the experts: are there any relevant specifications regarding the feed pumps at the DCS interlock startup site that specify which ones can start automatically and which ones cannot?
From a safety perspective, it is not recommended to allow the DCS interlocks to start the feeding pump or other pumps automatically, unless there are special process requirements; in current design and programming practices, such pumps are generally stopped by interlocks.
I think the same way, but technically there is a strong requirement to use interlock for starting the pump
In such a situation, you first need to check the instrument specifications to see if there are any mandatory requirements stating that interlocks cannot be added for pump startup. If none exist, explain to the process engineers the potential hazards or other issues involved. If they still insist on adding the interlocks, then do so as per their requirements. After all, most people consider that instruments are meant to serve the process needs. And if it’s a modification rather than a new project, have the process engineers submit an application for the interlock change; once it’s signed by the higher-level management, it’s ready to be implemented
The specifications shouldn’t be that detailed. If the self-starting feature is not critical for low-power applications, and since it’s a requirement dictated by the manufacturing process, as long as they put it in writing and you follow those requirements, you can proceed; if you’re still unsure, you can conduct a review
