When the unit is shut down for purging, is it still necessary to close the manual valves on both sides of the flow meter? Can’t flow meters be purged with steam for an extended period of time?
Don’t you remove your flow meter during purging?
During the shutdown of the unit, it is possible to close the manual valves on both sides of the flow meter. This is done to prevent unnecessary steam from flowing through the flow meter, thereby avoiding energy waste and wear on the flow meter. During shutdown periods, if there is no need to monitor or measure the flow rate, the flow meter can be turned off. Additionally, there are certain potential risks associated with using a steam purge flowmeter for extended periods of time. The high temperature and pressure of steam can have an adverse effect on the proper operation of the flow meter. If steam purging is required, it is recommended to turn off the steam supply promptly after the operation is completed, and to ensure the proper functioning and safety of the flow meter. .
It also depends on the flow meter; it’s possible to close the manual valves on both sides as well, but it’s best to remove the flow meter. However, it is also possible to consult the manufacturer; some flow meters do not require disassembly or closing of the shut-off valves. For the flow meters used in the purging process in our new workshop, we did not close the shut-off valves nor carry out any disassembly
