A process pipeline is shown in the figure below; if a flow meter is installed on this pipeline, the medium could be either gas or liquid. If the straight pipe sections before and after the installed flow meter meet the requirements, which of the positions A, B, C, and D is/are the most suitable for installation?
If both gas and liquid need to be measured, and the straight sections before and after the flowmeter meet the requirements, the most suitable locations are B or C. Because at position B, there is a sufficient straight pipe section behind the flow meter to ensure stable liquid flow ; At position C, there is a long straight pipe section in front of the flow meter to stabilize the gas flow. Location A is near the elbow, which may affect the accuracy of the flow meter. Position D is close to the valve and the pump, and the vibration of the pump as well as valve flow regulation may affect the metering performance of the flowmeter. Therefore, positions B and C are more suitable for installing flow meters. .
If the medium is sometimes a gas and sometimes a liquid, it is advisable to use two flowmeters on this pipeline – one for measuring gas and one for measuring liquid. Flowmeters generally find it difficult to be compatible with accurately measuring both gases and liquids. Choosing point B for installing the flow meter may seem to allow for the measurement of both gases and liquids, but how common is this practice in actual field applications and operations?

There is no difference; both meet the requirements for straight pipe sections

Vertical installation is preferred, as it makes it less likely for liquid or air to accumulate
