I’ve encountered a problem recently: one of the turbine flowmeters appears to be functioning properly on-site, but after operating for some time it occasionally shows values on the DCS system that remain fixed as if it has crashed; the normal operation is restored each time the power is cut off. One flow meter has been replaced, the channels of the DCS cards have been changed, and the cables have also been replaced, but the problem still persists. All other tests show no issues; it’s only this one device that has problems. What could be the reason for this?
It might be a software issue with the DCS system, or a mismatch in communication protocols, resulting in unstable data transmission. It is recommended to check the software settings of the DCS system to verify that the communication protocol is properly matched to the turbine flowmeter, and to ensure that there are no interference signals affecting the communication. If both the software and communication protocols are fine, it may be necessary to contact the equipment supplier to check whether there is an intermittent fault with the flow meter itself. .
The information you provided isn’t very sufficient; are you sure it’s not a vortex flow meter? How many wires does the flow meter have? What signals to DCS (communication, 4~20mA, frequency/pulse)?
There should be no problem with the software; I contacted the DCS manufacturer, and other flowmeters don’t have this issue. Currently, it is mainly suspected that there is a problem with the 4-20mA output circuit of the flow meter, or rather, interference is the cause
May I ask, regarding the issue you described, are the values shown on the local instruments consistent with those in the DCS? My advice is to identify the problem step by step
Check whether the signal cable of this flow meter is placed together with the power cable; everything that needed to be replaced has been replaced, so the possibility of interference is very high. (Especially motor power cables with variable frequency)
