Introduction to Nuclear Density Meters: I. Basic Definition A nuclear density meter (also known as a neutron density meter or gamma density meter) is an industrial instrument that uses the principle that the intensity of gamma rays decreases as they pass through materials depending on their density, to perform non-contact, continuous measurement of the density of solids/liquids/pastes. II. Core Principle • The radiation source (commonly Cs-137, Co-60, Na-22) emits gamma rays, which penetrate the pipeline/container and the medium under inspection. • The higher the medium density, the more radiation is absorbed/scattered, resulting in a lower intensity reaching the detector. • The detector converts the radiation intensity into electrical signals, which are then used to calculate and output the density value. • Essence: Based on Compton scattering and radiation absorption laws. III. Structural Composition • Source module: Sealed in a lead container for safe shielding. • Detector: Receives the gamma rays that have passed through (such as scintillator + photomultiplier tube)
