The turbine flow meter (also known as impeller flow meter) is a type of velocity flow meter that calculates flow rate by measuring the speed at which the fluid drives the turbine to rotate; it is suitable for measuring medium and low flow rates of clean liquids such as tap water and light oils. The following are its measurement principle, common faults, and solutions: I. Measurement Principle 1. Structural composition: It is mainly composed of a housing, a rotor (impeller), a magnetic coupler, and a counting mechanism (or sensor). The rotor is installed within the flow channel, with its blades at a certain angle to the direction of the fluid flow. 2. Working principle: When fluid flows through the flow meter, it impacts the blades of the rotor, causing the rotor to rotate; the rotation speed is proportional to the fluid flow rate (the higher the flow rate, the faster the rotor rotates). The rotation of the rotor is transmitted via a magnetic coupler (non-contact) to a counting mechanism or electronic sensor outside the housing (such as Hall elements or photoelectric sensors), converting mechanical rotation into electrical pulse signals. Flow calculation formula: Q = K × f (where Q is the flow rate, K is the instrument constant, and f is the pulse frequency). The total volume can be determined by counting the total number of pulses, while the real-time frequency corresponds to the instantaneous flow rate. II. Common fault symptoms and solutions 1. Flow rate displayed as 0 (no signal output) Cause: No fluid flow (e.g., pipeline valve is closed) ; The rotor is stuck by impurities (such as particles and fibers) and cannot rotate ; Failure of the magnetic coupler (such as demagnetization of the magnet) or damage to the sensor (such as failure of the Hall element) ; Loose wiring or power supply failure (electronic flow meter). Treatment: Verify whether the fluid is flowing in the pipeline (test by opening the valve) ; Disassemble the flow meter housing and clean the impurities from the rotor and passages (regular use of filters can help prevent this) ; Check the magnetic coupler (replace the magnet) or the sensor (use a multimeter to measure the sensor’s output signal; if no signal is detected, replace it) ; Tighten the terminal connections and check the power supply (for electronic models, ensure that 24VDC power is supplied properly). 2. The measured value is low (the displayed flow rate is lower than the actual value). Reason: Wear and deformation of the rotor blades result in a reduced force exerted by the flowing fluid, thereby lowering the rotational speed ; Slipping of the magnetic coupler (e.g., insufficient magnet attraction), resulting in a transmission speed that is lower than the actual speed of the rotating wheel ; The sensor sensitivity decreases, and some pulses are not detected (such as when the optical path of the photoelectric sensor is blocked). Treatment: Replace the worn rotor (ensure the blade angle matches the original specifications) ; Inspect the magnetic coupler, replace the demagnetized magnet or adjust the coupling gap ; Clean the sensors (such as the transmitter/receiver parts of photoelectric sensors), and replace sensors with insufficient sensitivity. 3. The measured value is too high (the displayed flow rate is higher than the actual value). Reason: The instrument constant K is set incorrectly (for example, the actual value of K is 100 pulses/L, but it is mistakenly set to K=80) ; The rotor shaft is loose, causing idling (the fluid does not push it, but the rotor rotates due to vibration) ; There are bubbles inside the pipeline, and these bubbles strike the rotor, causing additional rotation. Processing: Check the flow meter’s nameplate and adjust the instrument constant K (by calibrating with a standard device) ; Tighten the rotor shaft to ensure there is no looseness (replace the bearing if necessary) ; Install an exhaust valve upstream of the flow meter to remove bubbles from the pipeline (especially when measuring volatile liquids). 4. The flow rate shows significant fluctuations. Cause: Unstable fluid flow velocity (e.g., pump pulsation, frequent opening and closing of valves), resulting in the rotor speed varying erratically ; Insufficient lubrication of the rotor shaft, resulting in uneven rotational resistance (such as worn bushings) ; Electronic counting mechanisms are affected by electromagnetic interference (such as the presence of motors or frequency converters in the vicinity). Treatment: Install a flow stabilizing device (such as a buffer tank) upstream of the flow meter to stabilize the flow rate ; Apply lubricant to the rotor shaft (suitable for non-corrosive media), and replace the worn shaft sleeves ; Electronic flowmeters require the use of shielded cables, with the shielding layer grounded at one end, and they should be placed away from sources of electromagnetic interference. 5. Leakage Cause: Aging and damage of the shell gasket ; The flange bolts connecting it are loose or the sealing surfaces are damaged. Solution: Replace the aged gasket (use a material compatible with the medium, such as nitrile rubber or fluororubber) ; Retighten the flange bolts (tighten them evenly in a diagonal pattern), and repair or replace the damaged sealing surfaces. In summary, the failures of rotary flow meters are often related to mechanical jamming, component wear, and abnormal signal transmission. Routine maintenance should focus on the cleanliness of the fluid (by installing filters) as well as the wear condition of the rotor and shaft assembly; for electronic models, attention must be paid to the power supply and interference resistance. Regular calibration (by verifying the instrument constant K with a standard flow device) ensures measurement accuracy.
