Problems with ash discharge from the grate of atmospheric pressure gasifiers

Regarding the slag discharge from atmospheric pressure gasification furnaces, it is common to use two ash hoppers; those with a larger diameter and higher slag discharge volumes are equipped with 4 ash hoppers. I would like to ask what the theoretical rationale is behind such an arrangement? What are the main problems with installing a ash hopper?
The only atmospheric pressure vaporization furnace I’ve ever seen was one at a small nitrogen fertilizer plant during my university experiments; now I only have a basic understanding of its principle and the feeding process
