It was learned on November 14, 2018, that the natural gas non-catalytic partial oxidation unit, utilizing technology developed by Tohoku University of Technology, successfully started operation on July 13 of this year, and produced high-quality ethylene glycol on August 17. Xinjiang Tianying Petrochemical uses the natural gas non-catalytic partial oxidation technology developed by our university to produce ethylene glycol. The two parties signed a patent license agreement in May 2015 to build two natural gas non-catalytic partial oxidation units with a single-unit capacity of 12,500 Nm3/h in Alar City, Xinjiang. Through close industry-university-research collaboration, East China University of Science and Technology, Donghua Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., and Xinjiang Tianying Petrochemical have developed a process for synthesizing ethylene glycol from gaseous hydrocarbons, thereby opening up new possibilities for the efficient utilization of such hydrocarbons in product development. To date, our school’s non-catalytic partial oxidation technology for gaseous hydrocarbons has been applied in 7 enterprises. It’s a good method, but wasting such amounts of natural gas is indeed a bit wasteful. Since natural gas has a high hydrogen content, perhaps considering its co-gasification with coal could be an option
