Of this, aside from the 100,000-ton capacity increase at the Maoming Petrochemical plant, all other increases relate to the production capacity for ethylene glycol produced from syngas, with a total increase of 360,000 tons. This includes the capacity expansion projects at Yangmei Pingding, Hebei Xinji, and Tongliao Jinmei. The 200,000-ton-per-year coal-based ethylene glycol facility owned by Shandong Lihua Yi began selling its products at the beginning of 2018, and it is currently operating smoothly. Leading companies in the downstream sector are likely to exert more influence over the raw material market. However, there is still a significant gap compared to production methods using natural gas, shale gas, or naphtha, and the high costs associated with operation and maintenance further complicate matters. Environmental regulations also make it difficult for coal-based ethylene glycol production to survive. At present, demand in the polyester industry on the demand side is growing steadily. With technological advancements, it is an inevitable trend for coal-based ethylene glycol to enter the polyester market ; As major futures contracts are introduced one after another, the volume of coal-based MEG is increasing.
