The service life of the first-generation SEG® carbonylation catalyst for producing ethylene glycol from high-purity chemical synthesis gas exceeds six years. From December 2013 to May 2020, the first-generation SEG® carbonylation catalyst manufactured by Gaochemical (Jiangsu) New Chemical Materials Co., Ltd. served in the 50,000-ton/year ethylene glycol plant at Xinjiang Tianye for over six years. Gaohuaxue (Jiangsu) Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd. is a high-tech enterprise established wholly by Gaohuaxue Co., Ltd. in Nantong, Jiangsu, focusing on the production of catalysts. The factory utilizes Japan’s most advanced catalyst technologies and equipment to supply high-performance catalysts for the chemical industry, including SEG® catalysts for the production of ethylene glycol from syngas, as well as low-temperature denitration catalysts. Construction of the factory began in March 2012, trial production started in February 2013, and full-scale production of products commenced in July of the same year. In December 2013, approximately 11 tons of the first-generation carbonylation catalyst produced by Gaohua Xue (Jiangsu) Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd. were installed in one of the carbonylation reactors of Xinjiang Tianye’s 50,000-ton ethylene glycol production facility (which has two carbonylation reactors in total). As production continued, the catalyst’s lifespan far exceeded expectations. Through monitoring of various parameters such as its activity, selectivity, and stability, records for catalyst longevity were continuously broken, until the catalyst in that furnace completed its mission in May 2020. During these over six years, the first-phase plant of Xinjiang Tianye has produced approximately 310,000 tons of polyester-grade ethylene glycol. The reactors equipped with the HighChem Generation 1 catalysts have produced around 155,000 tons of ethylene glycol; in other words, each ton of catalyst has resulted in the production of 14,100 tons of ethylene glycol. This represents the longest service life ever recorded for a carbonylation catalyst used in the production of ethylene glycol from syngas on a global scale. The operational performance of the domestically produced catalysts in Phase I of Xinjiang Tianye has fully demonstrated the maturity and stability of the catalysts manufactured by High Chemistry (Jiangsu) Chemical New Materials Co., Ltd. These catalysts not only significantly reduce the production costs for enterprises but also facilitate the production management of manufacturing facilities.
