Recently, in Quwo County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province, Shanxi Wonen Chemical Co., Ltd. is carrying out the final preparations; the country’s first project for producing ethylene glycol from converter gas is about to start operating. Shanxi Woneng Chemical Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of Shanxi Jinnan Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd. (formerly Shanxi Liheng Iron and Steel Group). In 2018, it entered into a contract with Beijing Peking Pioneer Technology Co., Ltd. for a project aimed at purifying converter gas to obtain carbon monoxide, which is then used as a raw material for the synthesis of the chemical product ethylene glycol. The project took two years and also had to endure the challenges posed by the pandemic; now, it’s finally time to start using the vehicle. According to Rong Jie, the project manager for Beida Pioneer’s project in Shanxi WoNeng, all the adsorbents used for purifying carbon monoxide from converter gas have been installed. The reduction phase has now begun, and it is expected that the facility will be able to start operating soon. The Shanxi Wonen Comprehensive Exhaust Gas-to-Ethylene Glycol Project with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons uses coke oven gas and converter gas produced as by-products of Shanxi Liheng Steel as raw materials. After purification and deep-cold separation of H2/CO, the CTEG technology developed by High Chemistry and Donghua Technology is employed to produce 300,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year, while also generating 156 million cubic meters of LNG per year. Recently, the Φ4000 converter gas deoxidation reactor, manufactured by Hangzhou Linda Chemical Technology Engineering Co., Ltd., was successfully put into operation in Shanxi Woneng Chemical Technology Co., Ltd.’s project for producing 300,000 tons of ethylene glycol while simultaneously generating LNG from integrated waste gases. Currently, the temperature of the converter gas entering the furnace is 65°C, the temperature upon exiting the reactor is 75°C, and the average temperature of the catalyst is 93°C, all of which meet the specified control criteria.
