“Under the \"dual carbon\" goals, how Shaanxi Coal reduces emissions Author/Source: Sinochem New Network Date: November 9, 2021 Clicks: 19 At the recently held 2021 National Petroleum and Chemical Industry Forum on \"Carbon Peak\" and \"Carbon Neutrality\", as well as the event for recognizing leaders in energy efficiency and water efficiency, Shaanxi Beiyuan Chemical Group Co., Ltd. and Pucheng Clean Energy Chemical Co., Ltd., which are part of Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group Corporation, were awarded titles of advanced units in energy conservation within the petroleum and chemical industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, as well as being recognized as benchmark enterprises for energy efficiency in 2020. This is the result of Shaanxi Coal Group’s continued commitment to adopting a high-standard approach, formulating targeted measures to save energy, reduce consumption and emissions, and exploring paths for high-quality development in the context of the \"dual carbon\" and \"dual control\" goals. The current situation forces a transformation of the industrial structure. Shaanxi Coal Group currently has 10 chemical enterprises and over 50 production units, operating in 9 different fields including coal-to-olefins, methanol, synthetic ammonia, urea, coking, calcium carbide, PVC, and the selective utilization of coal. “The 14th Five-Year Plan period represents a critical time for the transformation and development of the chemical industry. Faced with various challenges related to policies, technology, and market conditions, Shaanxi Coal Group was forced to reevaluate its existing and planned chemical projects. It decided to pursue efficient utilization of resources in terms of product design and technical solutions, aiming for diversification, higher quality products, and lower carbon emissions. Yang Zhaoqian, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Shaanxi Coal Group, said that in recent years the company has put into operation several mines with annual production capacities of tens of millions of tons. It has also built the world’s first DMTO-Ⅱ industrial demonstration plant, thereby forming a modern coal chemical industry cluster centered on the differentiated utilization of coal, including coal-based chemicals and special petroleum products. Specifically, first is the advantage of advanced technical equipment, such as the clean coal gasification technology used by Shaanxi Chemical and Weihe Chemical, the DMTO-II technology employed by Puyang Chemical, and the technology for comprehensive and clean utilization of coal based on its different quality grades in Yulin ; Secondly, new chemical materials will enjoy long-term benefits, such as the development of biodegradable plastics and other similar products ; Third, demand for chemical products in the market is set to maintain steady growth; existing companies will see an increase in their market share for their products. Profits from traditional chemical products are expected to improve significantly, while the market value of specialty chemical products will be reassessed. According to statistics, from 2018 to 2020, the various units under Shaanxi Coal Group carried out 46 energy-saving and emission-reduction projects, with a total investment of 621.7448 million yuan. These efforts resulted in an annual savings of 75,400 tons of coal, 349.4065 million kWh of electricity, as well as a reduction of 850,300 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon reduction through “surgical procedures”: The Pu Jie Energy MTO technology upgrade demonstration project, located in the Weibei Coal Chemical Industry Park, produces polypropylene products of three different grades that can be widely used in areas such as non-woven fabrics, medical surgical supplies, and household hygiene products; these materials serve as basic raw materials for manufacturing epidemic prevention supplies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company promptly adjusted its product grades and prioritized production based on market conditions, providing raw materials for the in-demand medical supplies and thus demonstrating the responsibility of a state-owned enterprise. At present, Pu Jienenghua is actively carrying out six energy-saving and consumption-reduction improvement projects, including steam pipeline differential pressure power generation, extraction of high-quality coal from gasification slag, recovery of olefin off-gases, renovation of boiler burners, and renovation of MTO waste heat boilers. Meanwhile, it is examining the MES production management system with the aim of accelerating the development of smart factories, implementing intelligent operations, and thereby optimizing process operations. Similar to Pu Jieneng Chemical, the chemical enterprises under Shaanxi Coal Group have adopted a \"surgical\" approach, carrying out thorough optimizations of entire plants and production systems in order to achieve energy savings and carbon reduction. “Following the setting of the goals for carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the chemical industry sector prepared a research report on the sustainable development of this sector under these goals. It developed customized strategies for energy conservation and carbon reduction for each enterprise, identified 10 recommendations, and proposed more than 20 low-carbon and energy-saving technologies, thereby ensuring that the chemical industry could proactively pursue the dual transformation process and achieve low-carbon development. Exploring Paths for High-Quality Development In 2011, with the approval of the **Energy Bureau, Shaanxi Coal Group, together with 13 research and design institutions in the coal chemical industry, established the Key Laboratory for Clean Conversion of Coal by Quality at **Energy. Building on the preliminary explorations, and leveraging this industry-university-research platform, a large number of research efforts were carried out on key core technologies, as well as industrialization trials and demonstrations, resulting in a series of industry-leading technological achievements. For example, 3 technologies for the clean and efficient pyrolysis of lump coal, as well as 2 coal tar hydrogenation technologies, have been put into large-scale industrial operation ; Two technologies for rapid pyrolysis of coal dust to achieve high oil yields, along with one technology for integrated gasification and pyrolysis, have completed industrial-scale tests at a scale of 10,000 tons ; 1 methanol-to-butene and propylene technology and 2 PX production technologies via the coupling of benzene, toluene, and methanol have completed industrial-scale trials ; Industrial-scale testing has been completed for the technology of using 1.5 semi-coke in coal-fired power generation boilers ; A large-scale industrial testing facility for gasification through the combined injection of semi-coke and high-concentration organic wastewater is about to be put into operation... On December 8, 2020, coal tar-based aerospace kerosene, developed jointly by Shaanxi Coal Group and the Sixth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, was successfully used for the first time in a thermal test rig for complete aerospace rocket engines. The test results were significantly better than those achieved with the currently used rocket kerosene, marking a major breakthrough in the development of coal tar-based aerospace kerosene in China. “During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Shaanxi Coal Group will continue to carry out the construction of demonstration projects for the differentiated utilization of low-grade coal on a large scale across the entire industrial chain. It will also upgrade various coal utilization technologies for combined production, aiming to manufacture high-value-added materials and coal-based special fuels, thereby promoting the advanced, diversified, and low-carbon development of the coal chemical industry.
