Highlights of Modern Coal Chemical Industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan Period Author/Source: Sinochem New Network Date: 2019-09-09 Clicks: 48 Since the start of the 13th Five-Year Plan period, with the commissioning of a number of new coal chemical projects such as **Energy Group’s 1.08 million tons per year coal direct liquefaction facility, Shenhua Ningxia’s 4 million tons per year coal indirect liquefaction facility, and Datang’s coal-to-natural gas project in Keqi, along with numerous achievements in innovation, the development of modern coal chemical industry has entered a new phase. In the first half of 2019, production in the modern coal chemical industry remained stable overall, with capacity utilization at a reasonable level. Approximately 55.7 million tons of coal were converted, which made a positive contribution to ensuring energy security and diversifying chemical raw materials. The operational standards and production efficiency of the industry are continuously improving. The production load of the Shenhua Ordos coal direct liquefaction demonstration project has remained at around 85%, with stable operation over a single cycle exceeding 420 days. In the Shenhua Ningmei 4 million tons per year coal indirect liquefaction project, the fresh water consumption per unit of product has been reduced to 6.1 cubic meters per ton, which is significantly lower than the 12.8 cubic meters per ton level of Sasol in South Africa. Pucheng Clean Energy Chemical Company of Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group has added 9 new polyolefin grades, pushing its products into the high-end category. A localized pattern has initially taken shape. In China, modern coal chemical projects are mainly located in the **14 large-scale coal bases and 9 large-scale coal power bases that have been planned for development. Provinces such as Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Henan have seen rapid progress in the deep processing of coal; as a result, several industrial clusters for coal deep processing have been established, including the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base, the Ordos Energy and Chemical Industry Base, and the Yulin Energy and Chemical Industry Base. Thus, a structured layout for the modern coal chemical industry has begun to take shape. New breakthroughs have been achieved in technological innovation. A range of advanced gasification technologies are moving toward larger scale and longer operation cycles. Yanchang Petroleum has developed ultra-large-scale dual-fluidized-bed coal gasification technology, as well as integrated oxygen gasification technology for coal pyrolysis and gasification; Shaanxi Future Energy has utilized its own proprietary key technologies for high-temperature fluidized-bed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, thereby enriching and improving the options for coal-to-oil production; the key technologies for the multi-stage conversion of carbon dioxide into methane to produce syngas, developed through collaboration between the Shanghai Institute of Advanced Studies of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions, are of great significance for alleviating the energy crisis and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
