Guanghui Energy’s first domestic project for producing ethylene glycol from waste gas has achieved the required standards and full production capacity. Author/Source: Chemical Online. Date: June 8, 2022. Clicks: 3. By the end of May, after more than a month of intensive efforts, the project’s daily production volume reached 1,315 tons; the quality of the product met all the requirements specified in **GB/T4649-2018 “Ethylene Glycol for Industrial Use” – the standard for polyester-grade ethylene glycol, thus essentially achieving the desired standards and full production capacity. In recent years, Guanghui Energy has continuously optimized its industrial structure and pursued transformation and upgrading, advancing efforts in energy conservation, emission reduction, and low-carbon development. By adhering to the concept of green development, it has kept making innovations, thereby creating a new situation where low-carbon environmental protection and economic benefits go hand in hand. The project to produce 400,000 tons of ethylene glycol from waste gas requires a total investment of 3.559 billion yuan. It was launched in September 2019, and since June 2022 it has been in operation and generating profits. The project is constructed and operated by Hami Guanghui Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Guanghui Energy, with EPC general contracting provided by China Fifth Ring Engineering Co., Ltd. It primarily uses waste gas generated as a by-product of Xinjiang Guanghui Coal Clean Refining Co., Ltd. as raw material; this gas is purified through gas purification and separation devices to produce high-quality carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which are then used to manufacture ethylene glycol via the oxalate method. This project marks the first practical application in China of technology for converting waste gas into ethylene glycol, thereby turning such waste into a valuable resource. Once the project for producing ethylene glycol through the comprehensive utilization of gas comes online, it will be able to make use of 3 billion cubic meters of waste gas each year, thereby saving 600,000 tons of standard coal. This will result in a direct reduction of 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, as well as an indirect reduction of 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. It plays a positive role in promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, as well as in fostering green development of the ecological environment; it serves as a good example of such initiatives and has significant social benefits. It falls under the category of **projects that are encouraged for their comprehensive resource utilization and contribution to energy conservation and emission reduction**. Li Peng, deputy general manager and chief engineer of Hami Guanghui Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., said, “An annual production capacity of 400,000 tons of ethylene glycol can generate 1.7 billion yuan in sales revenue each year, with profits of around 400 million yuan.” Ethylene glycol products are high-value basic chemical products that are widely used in industries such as textiles, chemicals, solvents, and fine chemicals. In China, 90% of them are utilized in the textile industry; the clothing we wear on a daily basis is made from these materials. ” As the ethylene glycol project enters the phase of operation and generates tangible assets, along with efforts to focus on its core business, Guanghui Energy’s path in the field of \"green energy\" is likely to see long-term value growth. Against the backdrop of the \"dual carbon\" goals, this project has achieved maximum utilization of low-value waste gas resources, converting such waste gas into valuable syngas, thus delivering benefits in both economic terms and terms of environmental protection.
