On November 16 local time, at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, China held a side event titled “New Advances in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in China”. At the meeting, the \"Opportunities for Coupled CCUS Hydrogen Production in China (Report)\\" (hereinafter referred to as the Report) was officially released. The report shows that in 2020, China’s hydrogen production was around 33 million tons, accounting for about 30% of the global total. About two-thirds of China’s hydrogen is produced in coal-based hydrogen plants, and the hydrogen production industry emitted 360 million tons of carbon dioxide. China is now the only country in the world to use coal on a large scale for hydrogen production. The report states that for hydrogen to contribute to China’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality, it is crucial to shift the hydrogen production process toward low emissions. China’s energy resource profile is characterized by abundant coal, a shortage of oil, and limited natural gas. In areas where coal resources are plentiful, the conditions for carbon dioxide sequestration are favorable, and renewable energy options are limited, coal-to-hydrogen technology combined with CCUS represents an option for producing hydrogen at low cost with low emissions; it can also facilitate the development of infrastructure for carbon dioxide transportation and sequestration. The report states that, according to projections by the China Hydrogen Energy Alliance, China’s demand for hydrogen will rise to 37 million tons by 2030, and exceed 90 million tons by 2060. Moreover, many coal-to-hydrogen plants in China will be built in the near future, and the installation of CCUS will play a key role in helping these plants reduce emissions. The report states that capturing carbon dioxide and hydrogen is key raw materials for future synthetic fuels. Although production costs are currently high, synthetic fuels are one of the few options available for reducing emissions in long-distance transportation, especially in the aviation industry. Furthermore, carbon dioxide captured in China can also be used to improve oil recovery rates and to produce chemicals and building materials. It should be noted that in certain applications, carbon dioxide may be released back into the atmosphere (including through emissions from the combustion of synthetic fuels); therefore, rigorous accounting is required to determine the amount of emissions reduced. It is understood that this report was prepared in collaboration by the International Energy Agency, the China 21st Century Agenda Management Center, **Energy Group, and Beijing Institute of Technology. The report also examines the current status of hydrogen energy and CCUS development in China, and analyzes the potential evolution of hydrogen demand across various sectors of China’s economy and industry by 2060.
