What is the purpose of venting at the top of the intermediate cylinder in a reciprocating compressor?
It is mainly to prevent air leakage from the piston rod packing from putting pressure on the lubricating oil in the crankcase, thereby affecting the lubrication of the main bearing shells, crosshead, and small-end bearing shells.
Is there also one at the bottom of the intermediate cylinder that is connected to the oil collection tank and the flare network? Is the effect the same?

There is an oil collector connected to the bottom of the intermediate tube, and this oil collector is linked to the flare network. Is its function the same as that of the vent at the top?

A reciprocating piston rod box generally has two vents at the top: one connected to the flare system and the other connected to the vent at the top of the compressor room; both are used for nitrogen sealing to relieve pressure. There is also a small tank at the bottom for connecting to the air leak recovery system, to collect the lubricating oil.

Under normal circumstances, the vent flare is used. We regularly check the vent site to confirm whether it is unobstructed; if there is pressure when the manual valve at the vent site is opened, it indicates that the vent flare is blocked.
