Some odors caused by methanol evaporation
This methanol smell comes from the residual methanol in the reflux liquid; usually, when carbon dioxide-saturated gas is released after the reflux liquid passes through the purifier as pressure drops, the residual methanol in the liquid is carried out along with it, resulting in this methanol odor. Using a water seal is also an option; it is recommended that this water seal be installed at the top of the circulating fluid tank. The length of the exhaust pipe extending into the water seal should be around 200 mm. It is advisable to add some packing material inside the water seal (such as corrugated packing or Pall rings) to disperse the gases from the exhaust pipe and ensure they come into full contact with the water in the seal, thereby preventing the formation of large bubbles and achieving the purpose of washing. The pipe for draining excess water from the water seal should be inserted from the top of the tank, with its insertion depth being below the lowest liquid level in the tank. There’s no need to ask why – just do it that way. Then, the water in the water seal is replenished with desalinated water, through a continuous flow replenishment process. It is recommended to connect the water-sealed vent to the device’s vent main or to a high-point discharge. Keep it secret – an exclusive method.

Our company has a facility capable of producing 60,000 units of hydrogen from methanol; the off-gases from the VPSA process emit a strong odor, and this problem has taken a long time to resolve. This odor is related to various factors such as the quality of methanol, the quality of deionized water, and the quality of the washing process. In the end, we installed a CO2 recovery system to capture the CO2 present in those off-gases, instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.
