AES Andes abandons plans to build green hydrogen and ammonia projects in Chile

Recently, AES Andes announced that it has decided to abandon its plan to invest $10 billion in Chile to develop projects related to green hydrogen and ammonia, in order to focus on developing and building renewable energy and energy storage projects in the country. In December 2024, AES Andes submitted the project’s environmental impact assessment report to the relevant Chilean authorities and held discussions with the renowned South Korean company Samsung C&T to explore opportunities for producing green hydrogen in Chile for domestic use or for export to international markets. Since launching its transformation strategy \"Greentegra\" in 2018, AES Andes has added 2,181 megawatts of renewable energy generation and battery storage capacity in Chile. Currently, the company plans to bring online the Andes Solar III and Bolero BESS renewable energy projects in the first half of 2026, and to continue building the Arenales, Cristales, Pampas, and Atacama BESS projects. By 2027, these projects will add 2,363 megawatts of capacity, bringing AES Andes’ total capacity in Chile to around 4.5 gigawatts.
