On October 20, it was learned from the Quzhou Resources and Chemicals Innovation Institute (abbreviated as QUCI) that the results of the 2024 “China’s Best Technologies” competition, organized by the China Productivity Promotion Center Association, were officially announced recently. The project \"Research on the Dehydration of Brucite through Coupled Reactions to Produce Magnesium Chloride with Low Water Content\", in which Quhua Institute participated in research and development, was successfully selected for the 2024 \"China’s Excellent Technologies\" project database in the new materials category (Category B). It is understood that “China’s Excellent Technologies” is a brand for the collection and promotion of scientific and technological achievements, which was independently established in 2014 by the China Productivity Center Association with the support of departments such as the Ministry of Science and Technology. Centered on the identification of high-quality technologies and projects, this initiative aims to promote technological innovation, stimulate creativity, and facilitate the transformation of research results. It serves as a platform to showcase China’s strengths in technological innovation, and has become a highly influential technology evaluation event across the country, enjoying widespread recognition from the national productivity promotion systems as well as numerous enterprises. A total of 654 science and technology innovation products and industrializable \"excellent technologies\" from across the country were submitted for this selection. After rigorous evaluation by the \"China’s Excellent Technologies\" Review Committee and approval by the \"China’s Excellent Technologies\" Management Committee, 339 projects were selected from among the many outstanding ones to be awarded the \"China’s Excellent Technologies\" title, including 106 Category A projects and 233 Category B projects. Zhou Xin, the executive dean of Quhua Institute, explained that the project for which Quhua Institute received an award this time – “Research on the Dehydration of Brucite through Coupled Reactions to Produce Magnesium Chloride with Low Water Content” – is based on the original concept of \"coupled reaction dehydration\" proposed by Academician Duan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was carried out jointly by Quhua Institute, the team led by Professor Feng Junting from the National Key Laboratory of Efficient Utilization of Chemical Resources at Beijing University of Chemical Technology (referred to as the Key Laboratory), and Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Co., Ltd. (referred to as Salt Lake Co.). Focusing on the challenge of achieving high-value utilization of magnesium resources in the Qaidam Salt Lake in Qinghai, this project jointly developed an original new technology for dehydration through brucite-coupled reactions. During the implementation of this project, the Full-Weight Laboratory was primarily responsible for conducting mechanism studies and optimizing basic parameters on a laboratory scale, as well as carrying out experimental verification of the technical principles ; Quhua Institute made full use of its strengths in engineering research, taking on key tasks such as the industrial adaptation of the technology, the design of pilot-scale production processes, and the selection and evaluation of critical equipment. It provided essential support for transforming this technology from a laboratory achievement into a viable industrial solution. This technology achieves efficient dehydration of brucite at low temperatures by utilizing coupled reaction pathways; it allows for a significant reduction in the dehydration temperature required in traditional processes, and it also helps to minimize the formation of impurities. It completely transforms the traditional dehydration processes that rely on high temperatures and highly corrosive HCl gas for protection, offering notable advantages in terms of safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. To date, this project has fully completed the research phase in the laboratory as well as the proof of concept for engineering innovations. It received support from the Salt Lake Group’s key research projects and was successfully concluded. In November 2024, it passed the evaluation of scientific and technological achievements by the Qinghai Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and in September 2025 it passed the evaluation by the Chinese Chemical Society; it was rated as being at an \"internationally leading\" level by authoritative experts. Zhou Xin said that with the selection of the project \"Research on the Dehydration of Brucite through Coupled Reactions to Produce Low-Water Magnesium Chloride\" as one of the \"Excellent Chinese Technologies\", Salt Lake Co., Ltd. will continue to deepen its tripartite cooperation with Quhua Institute and Quanzhong Laboratory. This collaboration will accelerate the transition of original technologies from the stage of \"concept validation\" to actual industrial application, helping to transform scientific research advantages into industrial strengths. Together, they will contribute their expertise and efforts to building a world-class salt lake industry base, thereby providing solid support for ensuring the security of China’s strategic mineral resources and promoting high-quality development as well as green transformation and upgrading of the industry.
