What does a reflux ratio of 9:1 for a distillation column mean? Beginner, seeking an explanation
For example, if a total of 100 tons of product are produced at the top of the tower, they are divided into ten portions; 9 of these portions are sent as product out of the unit, while the remaining 1 portion is used as reflux and fed back into the tower. The reflux ratio at this point is 9:1.
How much should each of the discharge outlet at the top of the tower and the pneumatic valve for reflux be opened? Set the discharge port at 90% and the reflux at 10%?
The reflux ratio is the ratio of the flow rate back to the flow rate of product extraction; in addition to the valve opening degree, the actual pipeline resistance losses also need to be taken into account, so a flow meter is necessary

The valve opening cannot be determined so simply; it is determined based on the level of resistance in the pipeline, in order to control the flow rate through that pipeline. The resistance losses in two different pipelines cannot be the same. Moreover, different valves have different characteristic curves; it’s not the case that 90% opening corresponds to 90% of the flow area – this relationship needs to be clearly understood. The valve opening degree should be determined based on the actual conditions.
I fully agree with the comment made by the user above; there is no perfect proportional relationship between the valve opening degree and the flow rate.
