Recently, I have been working on a small-scale purification project for high-purity electronic specialty gases, and I’ve encountered quite a few issues related to equipment selection. Especially at a scale like ours, which lies between a laboratory and pilot plant, large distillation columns require a lot of space and significant investment, while traditional laboratory equipment struggles to meet the purity requirements. We have attempted to introduce a cabinet-type distillation unit; it covers an area of approximately 2m×2m, with a height that can be adjusted between 2 and 3 meters. It can operate under conditions ranging from negative pressure to high pressure, and its temperature control accuracy reaches ±0.1℃. What surprised me the most was its high-vacuum multi-layer insulation design, which enables very good control of heat loss even at low temperatures of -196°C. At present, we mainly use it to treat specialty gases in the semiconductor panel industry, with a purity level of over 6N and a yield of over 90%. Moreover, it starts up quickly and can reach equilibrium within 24-48 hours, unlike traditional towers which require a much longer time.
