Is forced flushing of the mechanical seal for single-stage double-suction centrifugal pumps standard?

Hai Youhao: I’m inquiring about unidirectional double-suction centrifugal pumps with a flow rate of 2600 m³/h and a head of 40 meters. In terms of design, some models do not have backwash pipes at the upper end of the seals on both sides, while others do have such pipes on both ends. Are there any requirements regarding whether backwash should be provided or not? Is it better to add it?
Temperature of the medium circulating water is less than 40℃
Whether to use flushing depends mainly on the operating conditions of the medium. The main purpose of external flushing is to clean the sealing chamber and prevent coking or blockages, as well as to remove excess heat from the sealing surfaces. The medium is circulating water with a low temperature; it does not coking and contains no solid particles. So there is no need for forced flushing. But conversely, in terms of your operating conditions, flushing is certainly more effective, yet there’s no need for it when considering overall costs and energy consumption.
Charging is related to the temperature and properties of the medium.
It’s better to include it; circulating water is quite dirty, and any substances can enter it at any time. Adding one is also quite simple; it’s not difficult.
