Textbooks on chemical engineering principles state that: \"The required liquid transfer can be carried out stably and continuously only when the head required by the pipeline is equal to the head provided by the pump at the same flow rate.\" I have a question that I can’t figure out. For example, the pump’s characteristic curve is: q=10, h=100; while the pipeline’s characteristic curve is q=10, h=50 ; Can the head provided by the pump be higher than the required head? Is that not okay? :Q

The operating point of a pump is the intersection of the pump’s performance curve and the pipeline’s performance curve. The pump you have chosen clearly does not match these requirements; when no exact model is available in the selection table, it is possible to choose a pump with a slightly higher flow rate and a slightly lower head pressure. During actual operation, the pressure can be increased and the flow rate reduced by adjusting the valves to control the pressure. There is absolutely no way to adjust this selection of yours. In short, during the pump selection process, the choice should be made by comparing the pump’s performance curves.
