Although I don’t work in a chemical plant, I have been to chemical production sites many times during winter, and I’ve encountered quite a few instances of freezing conditions. To prevent freezing in chemical plants during winter, it is essential to consider the medium inside the equipment and pipelines, to determine whether low temperatures in winter affect the process requirements. The main methods for preventing freezing are to use insulation material for thermal protection, or to add heating elements inside that insulation material. There are several ways to prevent freezing in winter; one is to use heating and insulation measures, with electric heating and steam heating being the two types of heating available. Second is evacuation: any unnecessary pipelines should be emptied and purged promptly. Third, make small discharges at the low point or circulate fluid to ensure flow. Tasks to be carried out for freeze and condensation prevention in winter: 1. Activate all heating systems and conduct a thorough inspection to ensure condensation is drained from the lowest points. 2. After the pump is taken out of use, it should be purged with nitrogen. 3. If the device’s waterline cannot be drained, it should be slightly opened to prevent freezing and cracking. 4. When purging the device, the residual liquid discharge valve should be flushed until steam is emitted and no liquid is discharged. 5. Where small amounts of water need to be discharged at low points, drainage ditches must be installed; there should be no standing water on site. If freezing occurs, it must be addressed promptly to prevent slips and injuries. 6. For the fire hydrants in the fire water supply system, as well as the valve chambers for these systems, it is necessary to close the valves located in those chambers and drain any water remaining in the hydrants, so that they are ready for use at any time. 7. Eyewash stations installed outdoors are protected from freezing through electric heating. While preventing freezing in winter, it is also necessary to ensure proper fire safety measures; as temperatures drop, electricity usage increases, so it is important to prevent electrical fires.

The unit at our facility has been shut down for three years. In the first year, steam was used for purging, but there was a problem with the pumps – water would accumulate inside them, and when it froze, the night shift mechanics barely got any sleep as the pumps became frozen. After that, we started using antifreeze to address this issue

If one pump is in operation and another is on standby, a bypass line can be added at the outlet so that the water flow will not freeze
