Some of the pumps in the equipment are equipped with white oil tanks, while many others do not have them. What is the main function of white oil? Which pumps require white oil tanks, and why don’t the other pumps have such tanks?
It depends on the medium; for example, with water pumps, there is no need for a white oil tank. For light hydrocarbon-based media, a pressure-free white oil tank is used – when the medium leaks, it enters this tank, which serves as a collection container, from where it is then burned off via a flare at the top of the tank. If the medium is something like benzene or toxic substances containing H2S, it must not be allowed to leak into the atmosphere; for this purpose, pressure-rated white oil tanks are typically used. When the main seal is damaged, the medium inside the tank will flow into the pump. It’s just a secure seal.
Does the white oil tank have a cooling function? I saw that the white oil tank on site was still exchanging heat with cooling water.
Yes, the standard requirement is based on the maximum temperature difference at the inlet and outlet of the sealed chamber; for oils, this is 16°C, while for water and ethylene glycol it is 8°C. Additionally, the system has an allowable temperature limit. The temperature of the buffer/isolation fluid is controlled by adjusting the amount of cooling water.
