What is shown in the diagram is a flame arrester for flammable pipelines
It looks like a flame arrester; judging from the color of the pipe, it could also be a filter. :lol
There should be a nameplate on this fitting; take a look at it.

Looking at the color of the pipeline, it seems to be a liquid (water) medium. It’s called a filter, but its shape doesn’t really resemble that of any specific type of filter; it’s more like a flame arrester.
