For the mechanical sealing of organic solvents containing 3% particulates, can silicon carbide rings be used?
The design institute advises you the following for mechanical seals with particles: 1. Use hard-to-hard stationary and rotating rings, such as SIC to SIC; try to avoid using graphite in combination with SIC. 2. Try to use a medium with a clean external flushing source to flush the sealing surface. 3. If there is no clean rinse source, it is recommended to use double sealing.
A hard-to-hard approach can be used; the Plan13 scheme is better than Plan11. If the specific gravity of the particulate matter is more than twice that of the organic solvent, then Plan31 can be employed
For the mechanical seal friction pair, a hard-to-hard configuration is used; when there aren’t many particles, a single-face design is sufficient. Make sure to use PTFE for the sealing ring
